Before I post more photos from the city center, I thought I’d show you another side of the Salzburg Castle. This is one of the largest castles in Europe and it was built by Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein in 1077. The building had many purposes throughout the years, most recently it was a prison for Italian prisoners during WWI and Nazi activists in the ’30s. However, the castle became a tourist attraction long before that, during the 19 century, when it was refurbished. You can see part of the fortification from almost any spot in the city, but in order to get a really good look, you have to leave the old center and take a ride through the outskirts of the city.
